What is Gratitude?
Why Should We Teach Gratitude?
Many parents teach their child gratitude through the use of manners (i.e. saying thank you) but many forget the second part of that: returning the kindness. This is what I want to emphasize and teach in the classroom.
Returning the kindness is not simply giving someone a compliment because they gave you one. It is doing something genuine for that other person. I think an example will help us better understand.
A classmate loans you a sharpened pencil because yours breaks. You cannot return that kindness by allowing them to borrow a sharpened pencil as you do not have one. You say thank you when he hands it to you. You have used your manners and have completed the first part of gratitude. Now you have to return the kindness. How?
This is what we have to teach. There are many ways you can return the kindness. You could help them with a problem, give them a compliment, take their paper and turn it in when you are both done, or sit with them at lunch and be a friend.
How Gratitude Will Reshape Your Classroom
Teaching gratitude will create a classroom community of positive students who are helpful to one another. This creates a safe environment where every student feels valued and wanted. The more our students feel happy and accepted in our classrooms the better they learn.
30 Day Gratitude Challenge for Teachers
We are going to focus on reducing stress by focusing on the positive (and avoiding Vampire Teachers). The goal of this challenge is to help us see the good (and be thankful) for all of the things around us. This isn’t always easy but I am going to show you how to do it step by step!

We are going to look at the things that teachers complain about the most and figure out why we should be grateful for them. The we will develop an attitude of gratitude. Share your photos of what you are most grateful for.
Gratitude Letters for our Students
Day 1: Your Most Difficult Student
Day 2: Your Most Quiet Student
Day 3: Your Student that is Most Often Overlooked
Day 4: Your Student who is always recognized
Continue working through this pattern until all of the students in your class have received a letter of gratitude from you.
30 Day Gratitude Challenge for Students
We can’t do a 30 day Gratitude Challenge and not include our students! I do not give homework (typically) but for this project I did.
The Gratitude Challenge Journal is available in my shop and is open ended. You can use it as a challenge or a journal (both options are included).
The prompts that I use with teachers on Instagram can easily be adapted to your students. I ask my students to find the positive in something they normally complain about (i.e. spelling tests). Or pick your own prompts.
Why Should I join the Challenge?
This is a life-long skill that is essential to learn. It is super easy to implement and is one that both you and your students will remember for years to come!
