I thought that since I was at home, I would dust off my favorite professional development books and given them another read. Just like with any good movie, you always see more the second time you watch it. How many times have we instructed our students to re-read in order to increase comprehension? Now is my time to put this into action.
What is Above Pause Whisper?
This is a method of getting your student's attention. I have 2 methods I use "Class, Class" or my beloved doorbell. When I use my doorbell, my students know they have until the end of it to stop what they are doing and look at me for instruction. This is part of the method ABOVE and PAUSE.
My attitude in the classroom affects so much of what happens. I never realized that how I get my students to quiet down also changes the tone. This is one of Michael Grinder's 7 Gems of ENVoY.
Who is Michael Grinder?
Michael Grinder is a expert in non-verbal communications and group Dynamics. In education, his focus is on helping teachers build relationships with their students and the implementation of non-verbal classroom management. He has written several books for teachers including ENVoY Classroom Management and his techniques are used in conjunction with the Daily 5.
The 7 Gems of ENVoY are 1) Freeze Body, 2) Above Pause Whisper, 3) Raise Your Hand vs. Speak Out 4) Exit Directions, 5) Most Important 20 Seconds, 6) Off/Neutral/On, and 7) Influence Approach. The first 4ish are available to read at the Nesa Center. I recommend printing out this PDF and practicing these skills.
The Daily 5
This book is in my top 10 list of books every elementary teacher should own. This book is now in its second edition. If you do not yet own this one, I recommend the 2nd Edition as the updates help clarify and ease the implementation of The Daily 5 into your classroom.
Where can I learn more?
I prefer real books so that I can highlight, take notes, and refer back to them again and again. I have found that Amazon generally has the best prices on professional books. The links below are affiliate links, meaning I do make a small percentage if you use this. These funds are then used to purchase additional items in my classroom.
I am so excited to use these new non-verbal communication techniques in my classroom. I know several students that would benefit from the few things I have read. I have also added his classroom management book to my summer reading list.
